Chundan vallam, or snake boats, are long wooden war canoes that can carry around a hundred rowers. Every monsoon season, villages across the backwaters race them in events known as vallam kali.
The Nehru Trophy
The most famous race is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha, traditionally held on the second Saturday of August. Rowers pull in rhythm to the songs of the vanchipattu, while crowds pack the shores.
How to watch
Tickets for pavilion seating are sold in advance. Arrive early, carry water and an umbrella, and expect a full day. If you can't make the Nehru Trophy, smaller village races run through August and September.
