Theyyam is a ritual form of worship from North Kerala, mainly the Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Performers in towering headdresses and vivid face paint are believed to embody deities, blessing devotees in village shrines.
When it happens
The Theyyam season generally runs from around October/November to May. Performances are community rituals, not shows, and often begin late at night or before dawn.
Visiting respectfully
Dress modestly, follow the lead of locals, keep a distance from performers and ask before taking photos. Going with a local guide helps you find performances and understand what you're seeing.
